Historical background of the Karaganda State Medical University (KSMU)

Karaganda State Medical University was founded in 1950. The University has become one of leading Medical Education Institution for teaching, scientific research and knowledge in Kazakhstan.  First medical students were enrolled in 1950. Institution of higher education for over half a century, our university continues to serve the region with 97 academic programmes: 7 post-secondary pre-medical courses, 6 undergraduate degree programmes, 7 postgraduate degree programmes, and 60 postgraduate certified courses including 6 faculty training programme on medical teacher competences.     

KSMU have taken part in the development of curriculum and authority documents at different periods and have contributed to the development of medical education and healthcare system of Kazakhstan. 

The University was certified to Quality Management System applicable to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, research and development of medical science, provision and management of library and information resources in accordance to international standard ISO 9001-2008 by National Quality Assurance UK and NQA – Russia. The Certificate is proved every year. 

KSMU passed the International Accreditation in compliance with the National Accreditation Center Standards for Institutions and is accredited by the Council for the period of 5 years, December 2010.   

In 2010 KSMU signed Manga Charta Universitatum, Bologna, Italy.  KSMU was included to AVICENNA Directory maintained by the University of Copenhagen in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). We are also member of Association of Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME). Medical teachers represented poster presentation at Annual Conferences of Association of Medical Education in Europe in 2008 (Prague, Czech Republic), 2009 (Malaga, Spain), 2010 (Glasgow, UK), 2011 (Vienna, Austria), and 2012 (Leon, France). We joined to Organization of PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS). Medical teachers of Karaganda State Medical University participate on annual Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (Singapore).

The university presently enrolls 7371 students including postsecondary education 1101 students, undergraduate medical students 6141, and postgraduate medical education 47 students.  

The Students taught by 653 staff: 61 full professors, 155 PhD and 50 masters.

Student support

Students participate in educational and research projects, social programme and student self-government. The university supports activities: dancing, playing musical instruments, signing, debates, poetry, theater and sport.   

KSMU provides sport complexes include tennis, gym, weightlifting hall, shooting range, skiing and football. We support the Foreign Language club to study English, French, German and Kazakh languages. 

In summer and winter students could visit sport camps.

 

Teaching at clinical settings

Medical students train clinical skills at 39 local clinical settings, at 120 clinical settings all over of Kazakhstan and outside, and at University Clinic and Dentistry Clinic.  

Clinical teaching/activities:

  • • Clinical teaching of students at undergraduate and postgraduate education; monitoring of  student placement 
  • • Providing the medical service to adult and child:  highly professional outpatient care and preventive medical examinations of the population 
  • • Improvement of medical care services by implementing innovative technologies of diagnostic, treatment and preventive medicine
  • • Provided guaranteed free medical care services  
  • • Maintaining emergency calls and needs of local healthcare service
  • • Participation in Medical Doctors and healthcare professionals certification 
  • • Providing the Republic and Regional master classes with participation foreign experts

Clinical Skills Center (CSC)

Clinical Skills Center established in September 2007. Clinical Skills Center is a structural subdivision of Karaganda State Medical University. It was developed in response to the changes in medical education trends in Kazakhstan and the increasing evidence of the use of simulation and clinical skills education for patient safety. 

The educational programmes conducted in the Clinical Skills Centre accommodate the multiprofessional healthcare community at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Programmes range from those identified by the State Compulsory Curriculum for the preparation of students for each of the professions to postgraduate training.

CSC bought under Cooperation with Michel S. Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami (USA) Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator Harvey. These simulators permit exactly simulate the auscultatory and palpatory image of 30 basic cardiovascular diseases that permit to student freely provide physical observation of cardiovascular system and conduct differentiated diagnosis. According to this is possible frequent observation for best understanding of disease picture, that practically impossible in case of real patient observation.

Center for Medical Education

Center for Medical Education established in 2009. The Centre provides educational support for the staff of University and collaborates with Faculties and Department of KSMU, providing the Faculty Development programme, implementation of new approaches to teaching and learning, including the more effective use of traditional methods and the application of new technology, dissemination of information about medical education, research in medical education  

Our major focus is to make teaching and learning more effective in all phases of education including undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education.
